American 'Idol's Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox Sign Record Deals

It hasn't even been 24 hours since Lee DeWyze was crowned this year's "American Idol," but already he and his runner-up, Crystal Bowersox, have signed their record deals.

DeWyze is signed to 19 Recordings Limited and RCA Records, while Bowersox is signed to 19 Recordings Limited and Jive Records, a source confirms exclusively to Billboard.com.

DeWyze joins Daughtry and Adam Lambert at RCA, while Bowersox can now count past "Idol" winners Jordin Sparks and Kris Allen, and 2009 finalist Allison Iraheta, as her labelmates.

If 19 and Sony Music stick to the release schedule of past years, fans can expect DeWyze and Bowersox's debut albums to be released in the fourth quarter, as "Idol" albums are typically targeted for release around the holiday season. Last year, Allen's self-titled debut and Lambert's "For Your Entertainment" were released on Nov. 17 and Nov. 23, respectively.

In the meantime, the pair's debut singles were released to iTunes and radio today. DeWyze's single, a cover of U2's "Beautiful Day," and Bowersox's version of Patty Griffin's "Up to the Mountain". It's too early to tell how many downloads "Beautiful Day" and "Up to the Mountain" may sell in their first week. However, industry sources contacted suggest looking to how the past few seasons'-worth of first and second-place finishers have fared with their debut singles in the week after the finale in order to forecast how DeWyze and Bowersox might do this week.

  1. Slightly off -topic but I have to ask: I've watched all 9 seasons of American Idol - pretty religiously - and this is the first time I've ever been this emotionally attached to an idol winning. But it's not just me; I hear this from a lot of people. I've also been going through past youtube videos and reading the comments and again, I'm floored at the love and devotion Lee has been able to generate from fans.

Here's the question: Has other idols (Taylor, Bo Bice, David Archuletta, David Cook, etc.) generated this much fervor? Or is this something uniquely Lee?

  2. I have never watched American Idol before. Always thought it was full of commercial rubbish, but this year was great because there were actual really talented musicians on it, like Lee, Crystal and Casey. I think because Lee is such a great person and his journey was so different to others, that he has generated a lot of love and support. You could totally sense that he lacked confidence, but as the season progressed, so did he. I am so proud of him because he has shown to the world that if you truly believe in yourself then you can achieve your goals. Well done, Lee. I'll buy your first album and 'Beautiful Day' will go straight to number 1. Just stay true to yourself and don't let anyone take advantage of your kind nature, and do a duet with Crystal please. You two are amazing together.

  3. I don't think it's unique to Lee. I think we just notice this sort of thing when we're the one invested in the person. Previous Idol winners and contestants have generated just as much fervor amongst their followers. Crystal has just as much love and devotion from her fans as Lee does. When it's someone you feel that pull to, you notice those things more and you want it to mean something. Which it does. It just does for other people as well, people you don't notice or care about.

  4. I agree with above...a duet with Lee and Chrystal would probably be great and even greater if they get together and write the song. Their voices just sound so good as one.
